Student Visas
Applying for a Student Visa
Those persons who wish to travel to the UK as students must be able to show that:
- They have been issued with the correct Entry Clearance to travel to the UK in this capacity.
- They have gained a confirmed place for a course at a publicly funded establishment of higher or further education; or at a recognised private educational establishment, or independent fee paying school. Any educational organisation must be included on the 'Department for Education and Skills' Register of Education and Training Providers'.
- They intend to leave the UK by the end of their studies, and that they have no intention of taking up employment or engaging in business, other than part time work when permission is granted by the Secretary of State for Education & Employment, unless permitted to switch to Points Based System Tier 1, Post Study Work or Highly Skilled Worker.
- They intend to study a full time degree course, or a course amounting to no less than 15hrs per week of organised daytime study of one subject, or directly related subjects, during weekdays.
- They are able to maintain and accommodate themselves and dependants without recourse to public funds.
It is no longer possible to switch into Student Visa status whilst in the UK. Please contact one of our consultants directly for further information specific to your circumstances. Entry clearance is mandatory for this visa.
Extending a Student Visa
Student Visas may be extended in order for the applicant to continue studying, but the applicant must be able to provide evidence that they have made suitable progress in their studies, that they have regularly attended their course, and that the new course is at a higher level to that of the previous course.
Those students whose Student Visa is issued for longer than six months, may then engage in casual work for up to 20hrs per week (during term time), and up to 40hrs per week during college holidays. The permission to work is not intended in order to provide monies on which to subsist.
